By 1997 the Thunderace had settled in as Yamaha's FZR1000-engined, YZF750R-framed litre sportbike with strong midrange and a 145 hp claimed peak. Reviewers praised its handling, powerful front brakes and relatively comfortable riding position. Fuel use rose steeply at high speed and the mirrors vibrated. The source lists small running changes around this period, such as one-piece alloy clip-ons, more fork adjustment and an alarm connector.
